Karl Minns Looks Back at 2024 - Norwich Playhouse (09.01.24)

Norfolk comedy hero Karl Minns returned to the stage at the Playhouse flanked by his alter ego She Go, in a performance which largely took an irreverent, sideways look at some of the news stories from around the county over the past 12 months.

Opening the show as himself for the first half hour or so, Karl tried out a range of material which included riffs on the General Election and Delia Smith's tenure at Norwich City. While he acknowledged the experimental nature of the set, noting that some bits fell a little flat, it was great to see Karl stripped back from his familiar character work.

The second half saw Karl don the distinctive wig and pink tracksuit as he became She Go. While there was a lot of the same type of material as in the first half, with local news headlines once again being the focus, the introduction of the "blonde bombsite" heralded a much more raucously funny affair, as we were regaled with tales of her daughter, Destiny Aguilera's exploits and the hilarious reading of She Go's 'romance' novel.

As an experienced local comedian with a clear affection for our quirky county, Karl delivers his carefully crafted comedy with his tongue firmly in his cheek. And while he knows his audience well, giving them what they came for, it was encouraging that he was unafraid to try out some new stuff. Definitely worth a watch.

Karl Minns Looks Back at 2024 continues at the Norwich Playhouse until the 19 Jan.
