Billed as a family-friendly production, this joyous piece from Norfolk based touring theatre company, Quill & Inkling, is one that everyone can enjoy.
It matters not whether you are familiar with the Cervantes novel of the same name, this is a thoroughly entertaining and accessible adaptation. It’s a supremely talented four-strong cast – Joshua Gould, Georgie Matthews, Kiara Hawker, and AJ Deane - who multi-role their way through the lovable tale of Don Quixote de la Mancha, and it’s carried out with such verve and wit, you can’t fail to be charmed.
With the visually engaging puppet of the title character (controlled and voiced by a spirited and dashing Joshua Gould), silly fights, daft props, and costume changes aplenty, there’s never a lull in proceedings, and plenty of visual appeal to keep your attention throughout.
The script, written by Quill & Inkling Co-Founder Ivan Wilkinson, is excellent, very funny, and rather close to the bone politically and socially at times. It's possibly worth noting that it's a little wordy, so perhaps holds more appeal for older children.
I was blessed with good weather on the performance I caught, but for goodness sake, be a little more prepared than I was – bring a chair or a blanket at least, and suncream/umbrella depending on the weather.
Don Quixote continues at various outdoor venues across East Anglia until 20 August. For full details, visit quillandinkling.com
