Now in its 47th year, the end-of-pier show at Cromer Pavilion Theatre is a unique proposition in an era where seasonal variety shows have all but disappeared. If that in itself isn't something to be celebrated, the quality of their fabulous production most certainly is.
Though it began in slightly inauspicious fashion, with arguably the weakest number of the evening (Pure Imagination), happily it got better and better as the night progressed, ending on the sensational crescendo that was L'amour, the Moulin Rouge mash-up.
Taking us through the musical numbers were lead vocalists Kristel Herrera and Joshua Mumby. Their 'Tom & Tina' duet was a particular highlight, with Herrera's soaring vocals tearing the roof off the theatre.
They were backed by the superb dancing ensemble, whose very varied, energetic, and inventive routines added more than a touch of gloss to proceedings.
In between we had top class comedy from the very likeable host Phil Reid. He conducted some great little skits throughout, but it was his 'masked singer' act which absolutely brought the house down as he combined ventroliquism with audience interaction to have everyone in fits of laughter.
The guest act, which alternates every few weeks, was the magician Danny Lee Grew. His command of the audience was exceptional, and alongside having some brilliantly mind-bending tricks to showcase, he delivered it all with a wonderful playful sense of humour.
While all the performers were superb, key to elevating the show further was the production and technical side of things, and the team delivered in style. The led projections were excellent and perfectly complemented the innovative set design, and with the addition of eye-catching costumes and a spectacular light show, it made for a real visual treat.
*it is worth pointing out that the programme was supposed to include a 'hair suspension' act, the duo known as Vice Versa, however, due to illness they were unable to perform. This was a slight dampener on the evening, as it would have been great to have a little more variety to the show, however, they will apparently be back in action from 30 July.
The brilliant, family friendly Cromer Pier Show continues at the Cromer Pavilion Theatre until 28 September. Tickets can be booked via cromerpier.co.uk or give the box office a call on 01263 512495.
